I was extremely fit, so it normally took me a good 30 minutes to ride from one side of town to the other.I considered what I would share with my Pop as I rode. I told him everything…so really, I was just deciding which stories I would embellish and which ones could wait until Sunday’s dinner to be told. As usual, Poppy was sitting in his favorite chair when I arrived and grandma (having heard me out the back) was busying herself in the kitchen. I was a shocker for not knocking. But…I was not a little girl anymore…so I thought I would knock. You could see the back door from the kitchen…and from the back door, you could see into the kitchen. Grandma had seen me and I could see the pom-pom on top of my Pop’s beanie moving. Despite knocking twice and calling out to let them know I was there, I was greeted with silence. I knew they knew that I was there…so I was puzzled. In true Bec style, I let myself in. I acknowledged Grandma in passing, but went straight to Pop’s chair. He got up and went outside. Cue tears. Lots and lots and lots AND LOTS of tears. He wouldn’t even speak to me! I begged him to tell me why…the whole time following him around from one part of the house to another.  I sobbed into the sleeve of his flannelette shirt hoping for him to grab a hold of my hand. I caught a glimpse of his face…his wet, red eyes and his clamped, yet oddly distorted mouth and realized in an instant that the reason for the silent treatment was that he was doing all he could not to cry too. My Poppy never cried. But THAT day….he cried…and when he did my heart broke in two.

We all liked to call pop the fix-it man! If it was broken, he could fix it and if we needed it made…he could make it. I still remember hitting him up at church one Sunday for a bug box like it was yesterday! It was for a Grade 11 Biology assignment and it was a last minute ‘it’s due on Wednesday, so I need it like yesterday’ type of request. Pop must have spent all night working on that baby! It was a 12 inch x 12 inch wooden box with a glass lid. The craftsmanship was truly magnificent.  Each surface had been lovingly rubbed with oil and each joint had been dovetailed by hand. Given the state of the bugs that I had caught, it was the most awesome overkill project that you’ve ever seen.

We scored an 11 out of 10 for that project…(yes…you read that right…an 11 out of 10)…but after all had been said and done and after all the bugs had been removed, I packed it away only to forget about it. For years and years it remained in the same spot underneath my bed, untouched. Then…that call I never thought would come, came. My Poppy was gone! Cue tears. Lots and lots and lots AND LOTS of tears.

Within a period of 48 hours, with avoidance mechanisms in place, I commenced the long drive home for his funeral. It seems to be a coping strategy of mine to clean, so as soon as I arrived, I bee-lined for my old room. My room was clean, so I decided that instead of facing the world, that I would go through all of my belongings and throw away anything that reminded me of him. They say God works in mysterious ways…and that night He did. I hadn’t consciously decided where to start, but the very first thing I unearthed was that box. My beloved Poppy’s box! Here I was, on what I thought would be the worst night of my life, smiling!

As I joyfully read through my journal entries, memories from that day of heartbreak came back to me. This time I wasn’t sad though. I was grateful. Grateful for being taught so early on not to put off until tomorrow what should be done today…and grateful for the reminder that we should never take those that we love (and the time we have with them) for granted. Who would have thought though that a bug box would ever become more then JUST a box?…

It’s been almost a decade since then and for a long time I’ve been looking for something similar that my husband and I can fill for each of our boys. I don’t have the woodworking skills that my Poppy had…but by the grace of God I have found someone that does. Since discovering Jeremy’s Nostalgia and Heirloom boxes (as well as 5 other boxes that I am completely and utterly smitten with) I have prayerfully considered whether or not to to also include them in all of my packages. I don’t often make emotion-driven decisions when it comes to business – but for now I have decided to gift each of my couples a Nostalgia box until I can no longer feasibly afford to do so.

Pinterest is, in short, a place where you can organize and sort (and share) beautiful images and content you have found on the web. It’s inspiration heaven! For me, I have utilized the ‘Boards’ function to make it easier for you to find and collect the information you need to style and  plan your very own B.WED Wedding.

To date, the Vanilla Chai Latte Style Board is my favorite. The name alone says a lot about me. I am a tea freak – and Vanilla Chai Lattes (with cinnamon sugar) are my absolute weakness. Perhaps it’s the warm, neutral, brown tones or the white china mugs full of tea that makes me wish I was on the other side of the world enjoying a Winter escape in the Alps…but whichever it is…it’s caused me to add a holiday in a gorgeous log cabin, in the mountains, with a good book on hand and plenty of chocolate and marshmallows, to my bucket list.

For those of you who would like more details regarding the names of the gown designers, who the photography is by, and information about the styling, the flowers, bouquets, etc. then please keep scrolling down the page and refer to the links listed under the Board in the credits section. For those who are wondering, the bow-tie featured was purchased from North Brisbane’s Child Clothing Designer Possum & Banjo. I literally purchased this tie the same day we left for the wedding. For months I had been looking for a tie – a decent one – that would meld in perfectly with the little vintage outfit that I’d put together for my two boys to wear to their Uncle’s Wedding in Maryborough, Queensland. Purely coincidentally, I spotted this tie a day before we were due to leave and honestly it is one of the best impulse buys I’ve ever made. My little man looked dashing and absolutely LOVED his little accessory. Not once did he try to take it off (which shocked me because it’s hard enough getting him to wear a hat during the day), and come bed time, we had tears until he could no longer keep his heavy eyes open.

I will forever cherish this image. My boys and my husband are my world and because of them I know what it is to love – and to be loved.

The day was filled with laughter and likewise, there were moments when we all had to wipe away the tears. Tash & Drew wanted their wedding to be an intimate affair and their decision to only invite those nearest and dearest made it the most relaxed wedding I’ve ever been to.  The celebrant – Brent Jones, was brilliant. He allowed the ceremony to unfold naturally and honored the way in which Tash & Drew wanted to exchange their vows. Figuratively speaking, it was one of the sweetest moments of the day. Correction…it ‘was’ the sweetest moment of the day…until we quite literally began eating the delicious delights that Simon of Eat Drink Catering, had prepared for us. My goodness the lightly battered baby zucchinis that were filled with ricotta were AMAZING!!!

On that note, the styling and the decor and the attention to detail that was the creative brainchild of Sugar Love Designs, was also beyond my wildest expectations! The Bride, Tash, wanted her wedding to have that slightly rustic, slightly vintage feel to it. The pieces that were selected for the table setting were therefore chic, feminine and elegant and the color palette on this occasion included pink, white and peachy tones as well as silver and gold accent pieces. The dress tied in perfectly with her vision for the day too. [Links to all the vendors can be found at the end of the post in the credits section].

Throughout the evening speeches were made and new friendships were formed. As we moved from the dining area to an outside entertaining area under the stars and fairy lights we all took the opportunity to reflect on what had been, in all of our opinions, one of the most beautiful and joyous day of our lives with Tash & Drew . Sure there are more of those moments to come – but as I enjoyed my straight off the pan crepe with caramelized orange pieces and freshly made vanilla bean ice cream, I remember thinking that days like these are what it’s all about!

Tash + Andrew were married at Deux Belettes two weeks ago on Saturday 06 October, 2012. Honestly, I had heard about the venue – but nothing prepared me for it’s sheer magnificence. French provincial is one word that springs to mind. Another is perfection! No matter what ‘style’ wedding you are planning though, it’s absolutely worth considering the Deux Belettes Guesthouse as a possible venue option.

But back to the wedding. Tash + Andrew are long-time friends of ours. I don’t typically bring my camera along to weddings or events that we are invited to as guests, but Tash told me that if I didn’t on this occasion that I would regret it for the rest of my life. She was right. I literally gasped when we pulled into the long dirt and stone driveway that leads to the Guesthouse. Enormous trees on both sides of the carriage way act like giant arch ways that honestly do transport you into another world. It’s magical.

There’s something new to discover every which way you look too! With time to explore on my side, I took a short stroll down the hill where I was greeted by two old outhouses with such character that I found myself grinning from ear to ear as I photographed them. An antique, gold framed mirror that looked to be hanging by the threads of webs that had long been abandoned by the spiders that built them, instantly caught my attention. I envisioned lovers hiding behind them and the many moments that only that mirror would have bore witness to.

I honestly could spend the rest of the day (perhaps even a week) telling you about this place – but I will save that for the full-length blog post I am preparing. In the meantime. Please enjoy this one shot that was taken as the sun was setting.

I have nothing but praise for Clayton. He is truly gifted. He has a generous spirit and his smile is so warm and welcoming. He is transparent and for that I am thankful. He holds nothing back and in one day he gave me the confidence to do the same. Trying to be someone I’m not is exhausting…more exhausting then trying to please everyone. In my 30+ years of existence I have seen and been through a lot. I have experienced absolute despair and likewise felt real joy. I know what it is to know grace. Similarly, I know what it is to love and I also know what it feels like to be loved. All these things have shaped the person I have become and in turn, they have shaped the way I see things. The way I see love is reflected in the images I take. In a way I tell love stories with my imagination, and in other ways I tell them with my heart. I am an ‘Imaginarian’.

Imaginarian – Noun. One who forms an image or a concept with both their heart and their mind

Still…I wish to use that term loosely to define my style of Photography – because to say there is no room for me to change or grow and further develop my approach to documenting love stories is foolish. In fact I cringe with embarrassment when I look at work I did when I started out. Sure I thought it was awesome at the time, but I have matured as both a person and a photographer and I expect that one day soon I will look at my current work and think the same. I really want that to be the case and if for some reason it’s not…then you have permission to call me out on it and direct me back to this post.

When photographing couples I work with them to make them look amazing and absolutely beautiful – even if they’ve never been in front of a camera before. Being connected to your clients and not unplugging from the session and the moment to ‘check’ that last frame really helps this process along too.  I am able to be present and ‘in-the-moment’ the whole time so I don’t miss something truly magical.

I am not veering away from digital photography – but rather I’m adding another valuable resource and skill set to my toolbox as a means of being able to truly express myself through my work. This decision then is as much about doing what’s right for me and what resonates with my soul as much as it is about being the right photographer for you. I love doing what I do and by incorporating the things I love into my work I can go about my job with a level of joy and excitement that makes being in this industry completely worthwhile.
